NP: “Lover Come Back To Me” – Chet Atkins & Les Paul. Chester and Lester… You pretty much can’t go wrong. Don’t skip this one when you find it in the Goodwill LP bin, it’s worth all 50 pennies.
NP: “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right” – Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. 1968 Flatt & Scruggs album “Changin’ Times” has them taking on Pete Seeger, Bobbie Gentry, and Woodie Guthrie compositions, as well as five songs by Dylan. Not for the bluegrass purist, but I still find it an enjoyable listen.
NP: “Snake Drive” – Tav Falco’s Panther Burns. Hard to pick just one Panther Burns song… It’s really such a diabolical mood thing. Grab an entire record and give it a listen (if you can get through it).
NP: “Germfree Adolescents” – X-Ray Spex. This playlist was actually compiled in April, and then put in this sequence soon after that. In other words, before Poly Styrene’s passing. I thought about taking the song out, but it was meant to be here.
NP: “Bacteria” – Archers of Loaf. One of my favorite Archers songs ever. There was actually a minute when I thought there was a chance to put this song out on Self-Starter, but it didn’t happen. Again… song was picked when AOL announced they were doing dates this summer. Couldn’t believe it when they actually played it at Music Hall Of Williamsburg.
NP: “Freight Train” – Elizabeth Cotten. I heard an absolutely incredible ukelele version of this song sung by a woman whose name I never learned on tour a couple of years ago, and I still think of it sometimes. This original ain’t too bad, either.
NP: “Don’t Call Him A Cowboy” – Conway Twitty. Good advice to all the ladies out there.
NP: “You Are in My Vision” – Tubeway Army. Was this song in a car commercial or something recently? It just popped into my head one day, i guess for no reason.
NP: “Over the Edge” – Dead Moon. I went through a real Dead Moon phase last winter… Listened to a bunch of records, over and over. And then never put anything on a playlist. It was time to fix that.
NP: “Motoroller Scalatron” – Stereolab. Ditto with Stereolab. Anybody got a copy of Transient Random Noise Bursts on LP that you’re looking to get rid of? I got $25 for ya right over here.
NP: “Can You Believe It” – Keith Cross & Peter Ross. The bonus track to the CD reissue of an impossible-to-find LP… Truthfully, there are better songs on the album, but this is the song I wanted to put on the playlist. I know somebody who says he wants one of songs from the album played at his funeral, and I assure you he’s serious.
NP: “We Can Swing Together” – Lindisfarne. Lindisfarne was one of the bigger bands in the UK in the 70’s. History hasn’t treated them very well. They’re not amazing, but… They should at least be better known than they are.
NP: “Audrey” – Mike Heron. Incredible String Band front man’s first solo album includes guests like John Cale, Ronnie Lane, Keith Moon, Richard Thompson, and Pete Townshend. Not too shabby. Doesn’t hurt that the album’s pretty damn great, too.
NP: “Thoughts Of You” – Dennis Wilson. Pacific Ocean Blue. You either drink the Kool-Aid or you don’t. I have.
NP: “Early In The Mornin’” – 22 with Little Red, Tangle Eye, & Hard Hair. From the “Negro Prison Songs” LP… Alan Lomax recordings made in 1947 at the Mississippi State Penitentiary. All acapella and sorta uncredited (“Prisoner 22?”, “Hard Hair”, etc.), it’s a pretty amazing listen.
NP: “Sunday Noon” – Mandrake Memorial. Weird Philly psych on Poppy from 1968/69. Seemed like as good of a last song as any.

Of course, this is based on my alphabetizing schema, not yours, so it’s possible that we might disagree about some arbitrary filing decision i’ve made (but i’ll be right). just in the interest of full disclosure, of course.

NP: “Catch The Beat” – Planning By Numbers. I had never heard (or even heard of) this early pop record on Beggars Banquet until i bought it a couple of weeks ago for $4 based entirely on the packaging and the fact that it was an early Beggars thing that I had never heard of. I won’t say it was a life-changing experience, but… it seems to me that this song should have been a hit. (forgive the vinyl rip… there’s only one instance of this album up on the internet that i could find [and i'm good at that sort of thing], and it’s a fuzzy vinyl rip.)
NP: “The Horse Song” – Iggy Pop. I just really love the Zombie Birdhouse record all the way through, but this one song ALWAYS puts me in a good mood.
NP: “If You Wanna (demo)” – The Vaccines. I got to work with The Vaccines a couple of weekends ago. Pretty much exactly the third/third/third split between Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, and The Ramones that I thought it would be, but… that’s not a bad thing. Album not out yet, so here’s a demo version of the first single.
NP: “Dig A Little Deeper” – Peter Bjorn And John. I’ll be touring with Peter Bjorn And John in April/May, but… professional allegiances aside, damn if they didn’t make a pretty great power pop record. This isn’t the best song on the record, but it is the catchiest.
NP: “Away Frm U” – Oberhofer. Oberhofer opened for The Vaccines both nights. New single. Catchy.
NP: “Colors In The Whites Of Your Eyes” – Heaven. New NYC band… total Ride thing, but… they do it REALLY WELL, so… it’s damn alright in my book.
NP: “All You Need” – True Widow. Austin band people are really going crazy about… and they’re quite good. They sound an awful lot like a lot of things I liked in 1993 while not sounding retro at all. They get the word “metal” tossed around in descriptions a lot, which, truthfully, is absolutely laughable. True Widow (at least on album… I haven’t seen them live) are only metal if you call Bitch Magnet, Eric’s Trip, and Swervedriver metal, too. We’re not even in Fudge Tunnel or Thee Hypnotics territory. Anyway, this is from their self-released record from 2 years ago… look for a new record on Kemado soon.
NP: “Seeded (‘tween Bone And Bark)” – Giant Sand. Went and listened to this one right before or after that OP8 album last week. Is this metal?
NP: “We Got More” – Anonymous. Small press psych masterpiece that people pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for. I don’t own it, but am going to keep my eyes open for the magic dollar bin find sometime in my life. It’s like Nazz meets Fleetwood Mac or something? Pretty great.
NP: “Reborn Not Gone” – Matt Bauder. More jazz for you… Current this time! NYC-by-way-of-Chicago, I met Matt personally and then heard his music, but if it had been the other way around I still would have liked this.
NP: “Sketch” – Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Rock Plaza Central kept getting comparisons to this band, and I kept forgetting to look them up. Finally just saw a copy for cheap on vinyl and picked it up on a lark. It’s good, but… sorta trying too hard to be Talk Talk at times. But, it still has its moments (even though i still WAY prefer Rock Plaza Central).
NP: “Sawed A Seed” – These Trails. Another small press record that the collectors go crazy for, but… this one only goes for like $150 when it sells. If you like those Linda Perhacs or Propinquity re-issues of the last few years, you should check this out. Also, Joanna Newson fans should give a listen.
NP: “Gate/Gate/Paragate” – Secret Mountains. Baltimore band… a friend told me to check them out, so I did. A bit too cloying / by-the-numbers at times, but not quite croissant rock… I do like it, I just want to hear some more before I form a more nuanced opinion.
NP: “Sleep Song” – Hooded Fang. New LP from Canada’s Hooded Fang… not as fun as their EP that I really liked last year, but still a pretty good listen.
NP: “Virginia” – Ed’s Redeeming Qualities. From the days before we called it outsider art. We still called it novelty then, eh? I actually went to go see these guys play a couple of times, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I really liked the night they announced an instrumental called “Extinction”, wound up a wind-up dinosaur and let it go across the floor of the club, and then matched the rhythm of the song to the ever-slowing steps of the toy. Naturally, the song ended when the dinosaur stopped. Performance art!
NP: “The Carroll County Accident” – Porter Wagoner. We should all listen to more Porter Wagoner.
NP: “TL’s Sleepwalk” – Terry Lee. I found this creepy and wonderful masterpiece via the Office Naps blog. Paul’s brother-in-law is the awesome 45 collector dude Dominic Welhouse, and he guest-hosted this entry. You should check out the background over there… I love scholarly research about such obscurities!

NP: “Hey King” – US Maple. Been listening to a lot of jazz and Captain Beefheart lately, and it made me go back to this US Maple record. I guess I’m just pre-programmed to like jazz and Beefheart and such, because this record fits right into that tradition, but fuck if i new that in 1995… I just thought it was amazing. And I still do.
NP: “The Things Love Will Make You Do” – Solomon Burke. Bought this LP a couple of months ago, and finally had a chance to listen to it. Great versions of a bunch of songs you’ve probably heard before. RIP, Solomon.
NP: “Togo” – Old And New Dreams. $5 at Other Music for this gem… Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, Ed Blackwell, and Don Cherry. Not the best jazz record I’ve ever heard, but… about as good of a $5 70’s jazz record as you are going to get.
NP: “Glass Rock” – Glass Rock. This one has been on some sort of rotation for the last year… Really good driving/road music.
NP: “Chivalry.mp3″ – Mekons. $10 for the original Sin Records import of this at Academy… Probably should have been $15-$20, and it’s sorta a “must” for any collection. Wasn’t looking for it, but… I’m glad to have found it.
NP: “The Dolphins” – Dion. From the 1968 “comeback record”. (Not to be confused with the 1975 comeback record produced by Phil Spector). This 1968 album contains songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix, and this Fred Neil cover.
NP: “Stand By Me” – Tin Man. Finnish by way of California and Austria minimal techno on a suburban Pennsylvania hard core label… sometimes i DO love the world we live in.
NP: “If I Think Of Love” – OP8. Was thinking about going to see Giant Sand and The Quavvers tonight, but at $22 i just couldn’t justify it, even if it will be a great show. But it made me go back and listen to this OP8 record I haven’t put on in 10 years. Accidental that OP8 became track #8 on this playlist.
NP: “Class War Tease” – The Capstan Shafts. I’ve had this song somewhere in the back of my head for the last 7 or 8 months since I’ve heard it… an egregious oversight that I haven’t included it on one of these. If we went back to a time (say, 1994) where there were a lot of bands that sorta sounded like this, I don’t think I’d mind.
NP: “The Daily Oblivian” – Overlord. And, so as not to make the same mistake, the local folks Overlord have a new album that’s not out for a few more weeks, but… dang… it’s tasty in a slightly more power-poppy / slightly less GBV-ey kinda way than the above.
NP: “Close My Eyes” – Ride. Saw a band the other night that reminded me to go back and listen to those first two Ride 12″’s. They’ve aged a bit, but… they’re still damn fine. Anybody out there have copies of the Fall EP, Nowhere LP, or Going Blank Again 2xLPs that you’re looking to unload, give me a ring before you throw ‘em on ebay or take them to Academy or whatever.
NP: “Summun, Bukmun, Umyun” – Pharoah Sanders. $10 for this bad boy… Didn’t even remotely think twice about this Pennsylvania purchase. Cover’s got more wear than I’d like, but… pristine vinyl. Awesome. When I’m listening to Pharoah Sanders I’m pretty convinced that Pharoah Sanders is the best there is.

NE: Marrow Bone with chimichurri at Animal in Los Angeles. Absolutely perfect marrow bone… the chimichurri was a bit too acrid, but… i ate it off the top first, and then the juice that had flavored the top of the marrow bone got into every bite and it was pretty sublime.
NE: Toad In A Hole at home, with Trader Joe’s Tuscan Pane and Tears Of Fire hot sauce: The Sword’s special hot sauce made by the Tears Of Joy store in Austin, TX.

NP: “You’ll Cry When I Die” – A House. I don’t like these things to have any sorta theme… I think it’s gimmicky and restrictive. But, still… every couple of months, I end up with a small pile of ignored tracks that just didn’t fit in other lists for whatever reason or I thought I wanted to add and then I got cold feet. So, anyway… this week there is a bit of “the island of misfit toys” theme. Starting off with one of those early 90’s college rock bands I still have a spot in my heart for: A House. I alphabetize them under “A”… what about you?
NP: “Wild Weekend” – Bill Anderson. Brought to you by Twoofus.org, The National Healthy Marriage Resource Center, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children & Families.
NP: “Amorous Gasman” – Chorchazade. Apparently the record this is from was never actually released? I end up at two blogs consistently while doing searches for either a) records that I have on vinyl, but don’t have the .mp3s of or b) records that i’ve only heard about but never seen: Mutant Sounds and Wilfully Obscure. Chorchazade is a Mutant Sounds find, and while I’m not as enamored of the stuff as they are, there is something fascinating and strange about this band. Worth the bandwidth.
NP: “Cowboy Movie” – David Crosby. If you’re going to commit to Graham Nash’s “Songs For Beginners” (as I have), you also have to commit to David Crosby’s “If I Could Only Remember My Name.” And I have. Absolutely essential $3 LP for sitting around the house and having a drink. Or driving. Good for driving, too!
NP: “Barrel Vault” – Dead Low Tide. Holy shit I wanted to put out the Dead Low Tide album on Self-Starter based on the strength of this demo. And then TigerStyle got it, and I was sad. And then they made a not-so-essential album and broke up before it even came out, so I wasn’t so sad anymore. But… turn this one up loud the next time you need to get fired up for a big test or something.
NP: “CH.O.B” – Duchess Says. I need to listen to more Québécois keyboard punk. So should you.
NP: “Stranger” – Figurine. I don’t even really like this that much, but it reminds me of Lali Puna’s Human League cover a bit, and gets slightly stuck in my head.
NP: “Five Four Child Voice” – Fridge. It starts out sounding like a nice Secret Stars song, then shifts to a pleasant-enough shuffle for a while. It works.
NP: “Stay In The Car” – Girls Against Boys. Not the best early GvsB song (that would be “Taste All The Fruit”), but… there’s still something about this one that works. What the hell they were thinking in 1989 I’ll never know. Pailhead, perhaps?
NP: “Virgin Mountain” – Loch Lomond. “Pleasant-enough” comes to mind again. I always preferred Rock Plaza Central to Loch Lomond, but, obviously, the world didn’t agree with me.
NP: “Munayé” – Mulatu Astatqé. From Ethiopiques #4 (probably my second favorite of the series, behind only #21 “Emahoy” by Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou… which is actually all solo piano and the least Ethiopique-esque release of the staggeringly good series), it’s just hard to find a good place for a song like this outside of some sort of jazz or funk themed list. So… i’ve just slapped it right here in the middle of this bad boy.
NP: “Ambulance Blues” – Neil Young. Finally got a nice copy of this vinyl this year… Tom’s Records in Red Lion, PA. Always wanted a copy… listen to it on vinyl, it really does beat the hell out of this .mp3.
NP: “Freaks” – Soul Asylum. Violent Soho were absolutely stunned to learn that not only were Soul Asylum a respectable band at one point, but absolutely one of the best live bands in the world. I guess I can’t blame them… They were 7-9 years old when “Grave Dancers Union” came out. Which means they were 0-2 when this song was written.
NP: “Waving At You” – The Mountain Goats. I’ve tried to take a step back from The Mountain Goats this year. Like, a conscious decision to listen to less John Darnielle. Nothing personal… it’s just become really hard to a) keep the flame burning so bright 16 years after the obsession began and b) to share that obsession with a bunch of fucking assholes. But damn if this song doesn’t kick me where it counts.
NP: “Waving At You (Live)” – The Mountain Goats. And I have to include this to make you noobs understand what a Mountain Goats show in 1996 was all about. This is from the handheld tape recorder of either Andy or Brian at a show that had about 60 people in attendance, most of which were talking, as you can hear. Crushing version. Crushing.

NP: “Fire” – Robert Gordon w/ Link Wray. These Robert Gordon w/ Link Wray records are worth the dollar when you see them in the $1 bin, but not worth it when you see them for $4. A bit forgettable, but reasonably enjoyable while you are listening. This song, apparently, was originally written for Elvis, but he died before he could record a version.
NP: “West Virginia Gals” – Al Hopkins And His Buckle Busters. Don’t sleep on the “lost” Volume 4 of Harry Smith’s “Anthology Of American Folk Music;” there’s some good stuff on here, too. Essential driving music on tour, actually. Just can’t listen to enough different styles and genres when you’re driving 6 hours a day every day for 50 days straight.
NP: “I Don’t Think Much About Her No More” – Mickey Newbury. Alisdair from The Clientele originally introduced me to the genius of Mickey Newbury. Been slowly picking up all the records on vinyl… I’m only missing “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” and the original pressing of his masterpiece “Looks Like Rain.” This track is from that record. If you have a copy of the original on LP you’d like to get rid of, I got $30 for you over here.
NP: “Never Said” – Liz Phair. This came on shuffle the other day on the ipod. It may sound even better today than it did back then, and damn… it sounded GREAT back then.
NP: “Swollen Sonnet” – Cold Water Flat. Man this is the kind of indie rock I loved in 1992. Wow. Didn’t even realize it was a guitar solo and an organ back then… just thought it made me want to jump around like a fool. Good stuff.
NP: “Skeleton” – Helium. Those first couple of Helium 7″’s were real game-changers. And the “Pirate Prude” EP, too. This is from the debut album “The Dirt Of Luck”, though… for some reason it just made more sense to include this song instead of something earlier (and i don’t have rips of those first 7″’s. Shit… note to self: find those.) [Update: they're downloading while I type this. the internet IS amazing.] Side note: Pop Narcotic’s founder Bill Peregoy offered considerable assistance and advice to the the little fledgeling label The Self-Starter Foundation back in 1994, and for that I will always be grateful.
NP: “Coconut” – Harry Nilsson. File Under: Songs You Thought Were Novelty Songs Growing Up, akin to Loudon Wainwright III’s “Dead Skunk” and “Yellow Submarine.”
NP: “Your Own Back Yard” – Dion. This record’s having a weird little resurgence the last couple of years, I think partially because of all the Phil Spector arrest and court case craziness. Don’t let me try to revisionist-history-out-cool you: I only heard of it a year ago or so. Was pretty stoked to find a really clean copy for $4 recently. Thanks to Don The Astor Place Record Guy!
NP: “A Case Of You” – Joni Mitchell. Tony from Great Lake Swimmers covered this song a couple of times on tour last year, and it was pretty breathtaking. Holy shit that little dude can sing. Doesn’t hurt to have this kind of source material, of course.
NP: “Charles” – Scrawl. Any time I see a Scrawl record for under $5 in a used bin I buy a copy, knowing I’ll give it to somebody somewhere along the line. Most recent recipient of a copy of Scrawl’s “Smallmouth” is Reine from Dungen. I convinced him to buy a copy of “He’s Drunk” for $5 at Gimme Gimme and he really liked it, so when he came over I pulled out a copy of “Smallmouth” that I bought at the Williams Grove flea market in Central PA over the summer and gave it to him. I’m looking for copies of “Velvet Hammer” and “Bloodsucker” on vinyl that somehow went missing over the years, so… if you got copies of those you’d like to sell, i’m yer buyer. Wanna barter some nice Dylan or Doors records?
NP: “Devil’s Roof” – Throwing Muses. Been listening to a lot of Warpaint lately. Reminded me to listen to some Throwing Muses, too. For some reason I keep finding all the Throwing Muses LPs for $3 and $4, so I’m slowly picking them up. I love the growly vocals on this one.
NP: “Library Shrine” – Ditch Croaker. This is another golden indie rock oldie that good ol’ shuffle unearthed for me last week. When Ditch Croaker covered a Mountain Goats song (“The Monkey Song”) on a 7″ in 1995 it kinda blew my mind.
NP: “Caroline” – Able Tasmans. A New Zealand band with an album title like “A Cuppa Tea And A Lie Down” is about as “built for Newmyer” as it gets. So in my wheelhouse it’s crazy I never heard of it until this year. Coulda had this in my life for a full 20+ years now, and I feel a pang of regret. Really! It’s that good! History lesson: Able Tasman was a Dutch explorer who was the first European to set foot on New Zealand and Van Diemen’s Land, which is today named after him instead: Tasmania. So that’s what The Edge was talking about in “Rattle And Hum!”
NP: “Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey” – Sly And The Family Stone. Been always looking for a good copy of this LP, and keep finding it for $10 in great shape or $5 in terrible condition, I finally scored a solid clean copy of this for $1 at the Salvation Army between In Your Ear and The Paradise in Boston this spring. Hot damn.
NP: “Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution” – The Last Poets. Got this for $8 at that same Williams Grove flea market trip mentioned above. Saw a copy for $75 and a copy for $40 while on the Dungen tour. A nice score on one of “the essentials.”
NP: “Sewin’ Up Avenues” – Sensational. 1999 was a pretty fun year, but this record made it better. Last track was rap’s beginnings… this track stretched the bounds of how far hip hop can go.
NP: “Runaway [feat. Pusha T]“ – Kanye West. And this track… Well, this is where hip hop as gone today? Maybe? I don’t know… say what you will, but I like all the Kanye records, this one included. Maybe because I don’t really listen to them as if they are hip hop records, but just as, well, records. I like labels as much (or more!) than the next guy, but… maybe it’s best to keep them away from records like this. But what do I know: I bought “The Joshua Tree” and “Green” on the day they came out, and liked (and still like) those records, too.

I was recently commissioned to do a two-hour playlist for a company who was holding a seminar / meet-and-greet in their offices, and it was about the “local” side of the “global/local” theme. So… they wanted some local and fresh music that was also a bit background-y. Consequently, this ended up being a bit of a “stuff white people like” playlist, completely ignoring hip hop, metal, noise, avant garde, etc. It’s also heavy on the easy listening of our current generation, a genre i call “croissant rock”. Fleet Foxes, Beach House, A Band Of Horse, Sigur Ros, etc. Anyway… no individual downloads (or descriptions) for this one… just a reasonably nice two-hour jaunt of mostly new local stuff for your enjoyment. Perhaps give a listen while reading a book at the beach, or while hosting a margarita-and-quacamole party? (feel free to invite!)

NR: “Too Much Happiness” – Alice Munro. Also finally reading Alice’s most recent collection. I knew three of the stories from versions in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, or Harper’s, but… once again, Alice Munro knocks it out of the park. Our greatest living fiction writer.
NR: “The Inactivist” – Chris Eaton. David Foster Wallace meets Mad Men? With a little something more… real? human? Can’t believe I waited this long to read it. Perhaps order directly from “Insomniac Press” and support our indie publishers?
NR: “The Enemy Within” – Mark Bowden. Pretty fascinating, if a bit showy, article about the Conficker computer worm, and the cat-and-mouse game between its programmers and those trying to kill it.

NW: M*A*S*H re-runs on Hallmark Channel and TVLand, and the occasional Monty Python’s Flying Circus on IFC. DVR is good for something!

It’s hard to get excited about another Trail Of Dead record, but, you know… if somebody played it for you and told you it was some new band from Chicago or a b-side by Japandroids, i bet you’d like it a whole lot.
NP: “Suggestion (live w/ Amy Pickering on vocals)” – Fugazi. If you ever got to see Fugazi live in DC in the early 90’s (or maybe even late 80’s), you may have gotten to see them do this version of “Suggestion” with Amy Pickering of Fire Party on vocals. This is ripped from a youtube video. Low volume, but… god damn.
NP: “Death Kit” – Karate. Vinyl rip of the first release of The Self-Starter Foundation. January, 1995. Officially a lifetime ago.
NP: “Machines” – Biffy Clyro. Sad Biffy song.

NP: “Fishing Bird (Empty Gutted In The Evening Breeze)” – Grouper. Somewhere between getting Cocteau Fever and going to see El Perro Del Mar, i decided to go back and listen to some Grouper.
NP: “Kill The Action” – East River Pipe. From the record with one of my favorite album covers of all time. The back cover, as seen on this poster makes it even better.
NP: “Jimmy Jazz” – The Clash. It made sense at the time.
NP: “Stuart” – The Dead Milkmen. “You know what, Stuart: I like you.”
NP: “Sweet Jane” – Mott The Hoople. Nobody does contemporary covers anymore. I mean… Velvet Underground released “Loaded” in September, 1970, and Mott The Hoople recorded “All The Young Dudes” in May, 1972. I guess i don’t really want a bunch of Animal Collective or Les Savy Fav covers hitting the streets any minute, but… it seems like the only covers of contemporary songs you ever hear are ironic, and that seems strange to me.
NP: “Against Pollution (Live)” – The Mountain Goats. Live at The Bell House on the last show of the last tour. I still prefer the old solo shows, but this was the best of the full-band shows i’ve seen him (them?) do. Unfortunately this recording doesn’t quite capture the brilliance of the un-mic’d show-stealing Steely Dan-esque guitar solo dropped by the “other guy” from Final Fantasy, but you can hear it over the final 150 seconds if you listen closely.
NP: “Click!” – Das Damen. Always preferred Das Damen to Sonic Youth. Still do.

NP: “Effortlessly” – Field Music. There’s something sorta “All Shook Down” Replacements-y about this track. In addition to the XTC influence that Field Music’s always had. I was really looking forward to this record, and it didn’t meet my expectations, but my expectations were pretty high.
NP: “Not Like This” – I Was A King. I should mention that this week’s playlist is all “new” music… with one exception, everything up here this week is under a year old. With that said… i don’t know anything about I Was A King except that it reminds me of Teenage Fanclub, and that’s good enough for me.
NP: “Hey OK” – Bad Sports. A hastily ripped track from a 7″ single. Fun little blast of fuzzy punk.
NP: “Suburban Beverage” – Real Estate. There’s something about Real Estate that reminds me of the 1992, when i was buying records by Lois, Guv’ner, Small Factory, Kicking Giant, etc. Not that they necessarily sound like those bands, but they do remind me of a simpler time in indie rock.
NP: “Silver Soul” – Beach House. I’m expecting there will be a quite a bit of burnout involving this record over the next couple of months. Personally, I’ve only listened in moderation, so I think I’ll be alright. But I do feel bad for all the shopgirls and barristas out there.
NP: “We’re Going To Hell” – Cursive. I don’t really love Cursive… they’re just one of those bands that I’m glad exist. The new record really gets under my skin, though. There’s an Afghan Whigs mood to this track that I really like. There’s something about the single-chord scratchy organ track way in the background that kinda kills me.
NP: “The River” – Oneida. Best triple LP of 2090? Hell, yes.
NP: “Love Is A Heavy Word” – Violent Soho. Also 1992 retro, but different.
NP: “Cherry Jam” – Oh!gunquit. My favorite skronk and skreetch of the year… the new project of my friends Christina and Simon in London. Totally retarded and awfully fun.
NP: “Sixteen” – The Heavy. I don’t think I will listen to the record very much, but it is an enjoyable listen when I do put it on.
NP: “Answer To Yourself” – The Soft Pack. Not my favorite song on the album, but I love the bad Dave Smalley / early straight edge hardcore style lyrics.
NP: “Well, Whatever” – The Kingsbury Manx. I guess it’s kinda mean to say, but they’ll never top the beauty of the first Kingsbury Manx record. That record came out of nowhere and knocked me on my ass in, oh, 2000 or whenever it came out. But I’m glad they keep slugging away.
NP: “You Muses Assist” – Alasdair Roberts. Filling the void until the next James Yorkston or King Creosote record…
NP: “Be That Easy” – Sade. This is another record that I had huge hopes for… I talked myself into believing that Sade was going to pull some sort of Mark Hollis on us, and drop a rambling, linear, majestic and strange record. Well… “Soldier Of Love” isn’t that. It’s not an embarrassing addition to the discography, but it isn’t a quantum leap either. I like that this song is trying to sound like Spain.
NP: “Waltze Of The Tennis Players” – Meg Baird. As mentioned above, this is the only song not from the last 12 months, this is from Meg’s 2007 debut solo album (moonlighting from Espers). I saw her play recently (she opend for Vetiver / Avi Buffalo), and while perhaps she was trying to hard to be steely and important, she still put on a pretty mesmorizing show.
NP: “Track 05″ – Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air. One-man band Allentown or Bethlehem, PA… I don’t actually know the name of this song, as his/their output is mostly on cassette and vinyl and virtually impossible to track down online. All I know is that this is “track 5″ from a 5-song cassette of some sort, and that this is my favorite discovery of the last couple of months. I was really blown away by Royal Bangs when i saw them the other night, and one of the things i realized about them was that the lead singer sounded like what I want my voice to sound like inside my head (but doesn’t sound that way in reality). Well… Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air are the same thing for me musically: it’s what I’d want my music to sound like if I actually made music. For fans of Explosions In The Sky and quality soundtracks. I need to go buy the split 12″ with Dragon Turtles now.

NP: “Love More” – Sharon Van Etten. Wow. What a song, and what a fucking performance thereof. This is the first fruits of (Philadelphia’s finest) Mr. Brian McTear’s new non-profit Weathervane Music Organization’s Shaking Through program, and what a way to start. (Kristin Thomas of Simple Machines/Tsunami/Future of Music Coalition also has a hand in Weathervane). A little trivia for you: the first time the words “The Self-Starter Foundation” appear on any record is on Brian’s old band (Mariner 9)’s first 7″, and that pre-dates the first Karate 7″ by a couple of weeks. Go here for some more information about Brian’s new venture. Oh, and… i probably shouldn’t have re-posted the .mp3 on the 30 Milkshakes servers, so… maybe head over to Weathervane and download it from over there, too, so that the powers-that-be will recognize their web traffic.
NP: “Coltrane Sundia” – Magma. A nice simple piece from Magma. Not normally their strong suit. I just looked up “strong suit” to see if it should be hyphenated or (heaven forbid) one word… the example given is “Foreign policy was the President’s strong suit.” I hope that example wasn’t written between 2000 and 2008.
NP: “Neukoln” – David Bowie. Something about that Magma piece made me think of this instrumental track.
NP: “Hallo Erde Hier Ist Alpha” – Berluc. And somehow the song from Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy” made me think of this rather middle-of-the-road German band, that i just so happen to enjoy on occasion. This song is sorta their “Major Tom”, as i guess it’s a bit of a love song to Sigmund Jähns, the first German to go into space.
NP: “When Will I Be Loved” – Linda Ronstadt. I’m being so INFORMATIVE this playlist. What the hell is going on? Anyway… how about a song i just remember hearing a million times on country radio when i was of single-digit age, and which i still think is fantastic? For blockbuster massive huge records, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more solid one than Linda’s “Heart Like A Wheel.”
NP: “Hell Walks The Street” – Shirl Milete. Here’s somebody i know nothing about, except that he was a label-mate of Townes Van Zandt on Poppy in 1969, and that in 1970 and 1971 a couple of his songs were sold to Elvis Presley. Oh, and… he played guitar with Waylon Jennings somewhere along the line, too. That’s enough of a pedigree to make me perk up my ears. Truly, it’s not some lost classic record… but it is a solid and enjoyable listen. If you have a copy on vinyl for sale, I’ll give you $15 for it.
NP: “Military Madness” – Graham Nash. Bill’s gotten me into this, the first post-Deja Vu solo record by Graham.
NP: “Schoolbuses Are For Children” – Grant Hart. The new Grant Hart is a damn solid listen, from front to back. Well done, Mr. Hart.
NP: “Trinkets And Rings” – Michael Chapman. I picked this Michael Chapman song a couple of weeks ago, and opted to not include it, simply because i didn’t want to be “that guy” that had a Michael Hurley and a Michael Chapman song in his playlist at the same time. And then Michael Chapman went and played a show last week, which i got to see, and now i need to put this on here now to be topical. He was great, by the way, but didn’t get to play long enough on the 6-act bill on a Monday night at Market Hotel.
NP: “Rosemary” – Grateful Dead. Have you ever actually listened to the Grateful Dead? Most people i know haven’t. Hell… i didn’t listen to a Led Zeppelin record straight through until i was 26 probably, so why the hell would i listen to a Dead record? Not a huge mistake, but… definitely a mistake. I’ve got $10 over here for a decently clean copy of “Aoxomoxoa” on vinyl.
NP: “No Reservations” – Hüsker Dü. Independent of the Grant Hart album above, i listened to the entire “Warehouse: Songs And Stories” album the other day while driving around Central Pennsylvania to get the full teenage experience. Damn if i could sing along to every song on this fucking record… EVERY SONG. All 20 of ‘em. At least the choruses, but, really… i’d say about 85% of the lyrics in general. Outside of the bands i’ve toured with or worked with, i don’t think i could say that about any records in the last 10 years. The Mountain Goats and Hot Chip are the only two artists i could even guess that that might be true of.
NP: “Mechanical Man” – Devo. Early demo. Kinda frustrating.
NP: “Ferryboat” – Tonto’s Expanding Head Band. TONTO is the world largest synthesizer, built in the late 60’s and early 70’s. It featured heavily on Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” and “Talking Book” records (as well as a million other records in the 70’s and later), but the creators also put out two records of their own. NW: Movies that prominently feature people throwing up in them! First “Crazy Heart” and then “The Edge Of Darkness” (don’t ask). And, of course: TONS of curling! fuck! i really do love watching it. no irony! did you know that since 1983 there have been FOUR blind curlers that have participated in the World Curling Championships? this is one of the things one learns when one googles “russian curling team.” not that there’s any reason i would google the russian women’s curling team.

i’m about to leave on a little mini-tour, but will hopefully find the time to do playlists while i’m away. fingers crossed! thanks to those that have sent me music… i am working through it all! keep it coming!
